Actress and producer Funke Akindele has narrated how she took on varied jobs as a student whereas studying at the University of Lagos to persist and fund herself.
In a current interview together with BellaNaija, the award-winning filmmaker said she taught herself to do nails by watching people in Yaba.
She recalled a painful incident in which a patron slapped her later than being unhappy alongside the activity.
“When I was at the University of Lagos, I used to shape nails. I did create-up. I learnt by watching community produce nails in Yaba. I used to customise for Aunty Bukky Wright. I would go to Yaba and acquire costumes and iron them,” she said.
Akindele greater revealed that she worked as a location administrator, negotiating using homeowners to utilize their properties for shoots and taking a cut of the payment.
She moreover admitted to selling bed spaces in UNILAG to stay.
“I was a location director. She would build me up. I learnt from persons making hair. If they paid the owner N100,000, I could take 30 and settle the someone 70. Even Iyabo Ojo then. I made nails for a girl one day, and she slapped me given that they were rubbish. I am a hustler. I would purchase them, stay in the corridor, and request audience to come and receive their nails done,” she said.
According to her, nail-making was just one of multiple hustles she engaged in as a student.
She said she too sold cakes, worked as a create-up artist, handled costuming, and sourced filming locations.
She mentioned that a create-up artist, Bimpe Onakoya, used to shop for cakes from her, and that she additionally did produce-up and costume task for actresses, including Bukky Wright and Iyabo Ojo.
“I was selling cakes. I would go to houses and knock. I did costuming. I sold bed space in UNILAG so I could persist.
