The Anambra Police Command says it has detained a masquerade, allegedly concerned in unprovoked violent assaults on residents of Awgbu Neighborhood in Orumba North LGA of the state.
In a press release issued in Awka and made out there to newsmen on Wednesday, the command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the incident occurred on Monday.
“The Anambra Police Command needs to tell the general public, particularly the individuals of Anambra and different involved individuals, that it has taken into custody the masquerade concerned within the unprovoked and violent assaults on harmless residents.
“The act led to a breach of public peace in Awgbu, Orumba North LGA.
“The suspect is at the moment in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to make sure that all these concerned are delivered to justice,” Ikenga added.
He described the conduct by the masquerade, as seen within the viral video at the moment in circulation, as “unacceptable, illegal, and wouldn’t be tolerated below any guise”.
An eyewitness in the neighborhood advised the Information Company of Nigeria (NAN) that the masquerade, accompanied by some youths, went out of its approach to assault unsuspecting members of the general public and destroyed individuals’s property.
Talking on the situation of anonymity, he stated that the incident occurred over the past “Ofala” competition in honour of the late Conventional Ruler of Awgbu, Igwe Michael Okechukwu.
NAN experiences that the competition was presupposed to be a solemn cultural and symbolic celebration of the life and reign of the late conventional ruler. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
