Teachers in main and secondary colleges within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their strike motion.
The suspension was contained in a communique issued on the finish of an emergency State Executive Council (SEC) assembly of the FCT Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), held on Friday, October 16, 2026, on the Labour House, Abuja, below the management of Comrade Stephen Knabayi.
A duplicate of the communique was obtained by our reporter late Tuesday night time.
The NLC stated the strike was suspended following exhaustive deliberations and consultations on the problems that led to the indefinite industrial motion. It stated a sequence of interventions and reconciliation conferences had been held with the FCT Administration, leading to resolutions that had been reached and documented.
The union stated the resolutions included provisions for the promotion of training officers. It defined that vacancies for training officers could be primarily based on institution positions declared by the Education Secretariat, noting {that a} sizeable variety of directorate workers had been anticipated to go away the service quickly, thereby creating vacancies for the upward motion of officers.
On the 2025 promotion examination, the union stated the FCT Civil Service Commission could be notified of the Executive Council’s approval, whereas a brand new date could be introduced to allow eligible candidates to sit down for the examination.
On the redeployment of officers having fun with the harmonised retirement age for teachers again to the lecture rooms, the FCT NLC government directed that the matter be stepped down pending additional directives.
In view of the resolutions and within the spirit of social dialogue and industrial concord, the NLC stated the SEC had resolved to suspend the indefinite strike with rapid impact.
“And that all workers, particularly FCT teachers, are directed to resume work on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The NLC FCT Council shall constitute a monitoring committee to ensure full implementation of the resolutions within the agreed timelines,” the communique stated.
The communique added that “failure to implement any of the resolutions shall lead to automatic resumption of the strike without further delay notice.”
Recall that teachers in main and secondary colleges throughout the six space councils of the FCT, below the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), launched into an indefinite strike on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, following a directive from the FCT NLC.
The strike adopted alleged failure by the FCT Administration to satisfy the teachers’ calls for, together with the supply of vacancies as a precondition for teachers’ promotion, amongst different points.
